To call the 2021 70.3 World Championships in St. George, Utah, an epic race is an absolute understatement. Every single weather condition imaginable, aside from snow or the bomb cyclone...

I’m three months away from racing at the Ironman World Championships in Kona for the first time. My training is going great – but hydration has always been the limiting factor in my 140.6 races.

Des Moines 70.3 turned 41.4…My first race in the professional field. But what does that mean? To my non-triathlon friends the difference may be confusing as I have competed in World Championships before, so…isn’t that like the top level?

To prepare I had learned how swim properly rather than breast stroke, had bought a road bike (my first ever!), learned to clip in and out, bought a cheap tri kit and trained with my friends Dad, who luckily is a Triathlon Coach.

Reaching back in the archives, in 2004, four weeks before Kona I had a bike crash, broke left Femur, three screws and lots of mental anguish later, Doctor said: Your running days are over.  I said: You can’t be serious. Then I remembered, I had signed up for Lake Placid 2005 (yeah, yeah, it was a long time ago) but it seems like yesterday. Rays of hope, I started slowly getting back in shape and did my first race early March.

I always did my cycling outdoors until October 2017 when I was hit by an SUV. At that point I bought a Wahoo Kickr to move indoors to ride on Zwift. In a three-story 2,400 square foot townhouse I used to share I couldn’t set my bike up anywhere without the other person I lived with complaining.

After competing in Triathlon for almost six years I have come to realize that there are two distinct types of Triathletes, those who grew up as swimmers and those who did not. It is usually very easy to differentiate between the two groups. One group has a sense of confidence on the start line and in the case of a mass start they can usually be found at the front of the pack, the other lines up towards the back and might be overheard saying something along the lines of, “If I can just make it through the swim I’ll be fine”. As someone who falls into the second group I am here to tell you that this doesn’t have to be the case, you can learn be confident and even love the water.

A little more went into Gulf Coast 70.3 than any race I had done before. Prior to October 2019, I was self-coached in the swim and bike, and had a run specific coach (@TrailATL). Big plans were set for the 2020 season, but we all know what happened to those. With the unknown component of when racing would resume, my coach (@JPElitetri) kept uploading workouts and I kept on truckin’ through them. The weeks leading up to the race is when things got really tough.

Due to Covid-19, so many races have been cancelled or postponed since early spring. I was signed up to compete Ironman Muncie 70.3 on 7/11/20 which seemed like it would happen. We received an email with new protocols to keep athletes and volunteers safe. They video showed us the changes they made including a sign up for bike drop-off so that they can control the number of athletes coming to the transition area the day before the race.

Had a chance to race at the Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon a few weeks.  I was able to sneak into the top 10 and take home Masters only because my friend Chris Johnson finished in the top 3.  Here’s a quick recap of the race.

During the coronavirus pandemic and in a world that’s social distancing, there’s not a lot of triathlon activity to get energized about with race delays and cancellations. Like many sport fans, I’m turning to EPSN and IRONMAN drawing inspiration from past performances, iconic finishes and underdogs taking the win.  As I reflect on my greatest accomplishment in my 20+ years of triathlon, I thought I’d share the memory.
