September 24, 2017 is a big day in the Southeast US for triathlon. There is both Ironman Chattanooga and Ironman Augusta 70.3. If you are a triathlete in the Southeast, chances are you are racing this day. The date is fast approaching so here are a few last minute tips for preparation.

Transition Dry Run

A day or two before you pack up your gear, set everything up as you need it in transition. Start with a pre-swim pile which includes:

  • tri kit
  • wetsuit
  • goggles
  • sun block
  • body glide
  • any pre-race snacks you use

Then setup your bike pile:

  • helmet
  • sunglasses
  • bike shoes
  • socks (if you are into that kind of thing)
  • bike nutrition (including bottles)

Then create your run pile which should include

  • run shoes
  • visor or hat
  • race belt (safety pins if needed)
  • run nutrition

Lastly you can create a post race pile. It's never fun sitting in soggy tri shorts!

  • clothing change
  • favorite post race snack

When everything is in its pile mentally run through your race. Talk through the pre-race setup, swim a few strokes, then visualize what you will do in T1, then do the same for T2. This will allow you to realize if anything is missing and you will feel more confident in transition on race day. The bonus is that you will just have to pack up these piles when you leave for the race.
