Q: Matt, I’m wrapping up my season and trying to figure out how to stay sharp through the winter. What should I be focusing on right now?
Hey, great question — this is exactly the time of year when smart riders set themselves up for a killer spring. October’s not just the end of the season; it’s a pivot point. You’re not chasing race form anymore, but you’re building the foundation for everything that comes next. Here’s what I always tell our athletes to focus on before winter sets in:
1. Dial in your indoor setup.
Your trainer space should feel like your second home. Calibrate your power meter, make sure your fans are working (trust me, airflow matters), and get comfortable. Platforms like Zwift, TrainerRoad, and Wahoo X make indoor training actually fun and structured — no more random grinding.
2. Set winter goals that make sense.
This isn’t the time to go full gas. Focus on building your aerobic base and technique. Do longer endurance rides, sprinkle in cadence work, and layer up for outdoor sessions. Think of it as preparing your engine for next season — slow, steady, and consistent wins here.
3. Get stronger off the bike.
I’m a big believer in gym work this time of year. Hit some core, mobility, and strength training two or three times a week. Movements like deadlifts, lunges, and planks will make you more stable and efficient once you’re back outside.
4. Reset your headspace.
Mental fitness matters just as much as physical. Winter is perfect for recharging your focus. Try meditation, journaling, or just taking a few chill rides with no data screens. You’ll be sharper when the structured work kicks back in.
5. Give your bike some love.
Do a full inspection — chain, cables, brake pads, all of it. If you ride carbon year-round, maybe switch to a winter or gravel setup with wider tires. Indoor sessions are also a great time to fine-tune your fit and make small cockpit adjustments.
Bottom line: winter isn’t downtime — it’s build time. The riders who come into spring strong aren’t the ones who “rested” all winter; they’re the ones who trained smarter, not harder. So take this month to pivot — physically, mentally, and mechanically — toward your next breakthrough.
