The Cervélo S5 VWD Frameset takes the same molds as the S5 and adds more expensive material and a more complicated lay-up to the fast S5. Think of it as S5 shapes crossed with RCA lay-up and geometry. VWD is short for Vroomen White Design, the guys who started Cervélo and led the company to its position as a leader in the advancement of frame engineering. The result is a 990g aero frame (size 54, painted, with hardware) that is stiffer and better riding than the S5. It's extra joy added to a zippy platform.
An aero road bike is an obvious choice for triathlon, but it's also great for roadies, and anyone who wants to wants to pick up free speed. Cervélo likes to point out that aero is always on, and that slower riders actually benefit from aerodynamics more, as they're out for longer and thus the savings is greater. The weight is so low you're hardly at a disadvantage on the climbs, the geometry means that you've got a balance between stability and sprightly, and with both added stiffness and added comfort, you can go longer faster with less fatigue. This is why Garmin's David Millar chose it for the Tour de France, and he won a mountain stage on it after a day-long breakaway.
The S5 is shaped for slicing the wind. The narrow head tube hides the top tube and top of the down tube behind it. The fork crown is nestled in a notch in the down tube to smooth out airflow, and the down tube is dropped to better integrate with the front wheel. The lower down tube has been shaped to better shield the water bottles, which Cervélo assumes most people are going to ride with. If you want to run a single bottle, you can use the lower two of the three down tube bosses, or you can put an Arundel Chrono cage on the seat tube, and it will essentially disappear from the wind. Likewise, Cervélo assumes most people want conventional rear brakes, so they built up the shoulders of the seat stays so the brake caliper would be shielded from the wind.
The bike is also stiffer by design. The BBright bottom bracket standard allows for a wider and larger diameter shell. This means more material to control and limit flex at the bottom bracket. It also allows for a 30mm thru-axle crank, which can further propulsion efficiency.
And the frame has smarts. Running cables internally was a given, due to the drag reduction that hiding cables and housing from the wind provide. But because Cervélo doesn't know what you'll want to run today and what the market will look like tomorrow, they designed Future Proof routing, which means you can run cable or hydraulic brakes, or cable or electronic shifting, and all you need to do is change the plugs and inserts to switch from one to the other.
The Cervélo S5 VWD frameset comes with an FSA internal headset, a Cervélo aero seat post, and an unbeatable aero edge.
