How to Try On Your New Wetsuit
Buying a wetsuit online can be a little disconcerting. What if the size isn’t right? How can I tell if I have the proper fit? Well, Matt and Shannon at all3sports have teamed together to bring you the ultimate guide to trying on your wetsuit and checking for proper fit.
That was a lot of information! How about a quick review!
- when you take your wetsuit out of the box, turn it inside out a bit to try on, always pull from the inside of the suit to avoid damaging the suit with nail digs
- position the suit as you go up: after putting your feet in the legs, pull above the ankle bone, continue to fit the suit as you go up to the waist; do the same with your arms.
Checking for fit
- check the neckline first, it shouldn’t bluge not be too tight. Sometimes you can fix a tight neck by adjusting the velcro closure
- check the arms of the suit hit above the wrist bone without excess material; suit should be snug
- check the legs of the suit hit above the ankle bone, again, without excess material, especially check for buncing behind the knee, and smooth out with the palms of your hands.
- finally, the chest should allow you to breathe comfortably. It might feel a little odd at first, but you shouldn’t feel too constricted.

Your video on proper wetsuit fit was very helpful. I haven’t purchased one yet, partially because of how wetsuits should be worn and fit. Thanks for the info.

Awesome, just got a suit and this prevented me from most likely putting at least one hole in it.

It would be great if you would do a video on getting OUT of the wetsuit quickly!

We’ll put that one on the list also, but before we do… Here is a tip: Wetsuit strippers
Actually, there is a product that helps Trislide. Safe for your wetsuit, you spray it on the entire inside of the suit before getting in and it helps there as well as when you take the suit off.

How do I find a wetsuit that will fit when my body type doesn’t quite fit in the sizing charts? I am currently 5′6″ and 200lbs. female doing my first sprint tri this weekend. So it’s a little late for this weekend but if I enjoy the event and would like to do more there are events that require a wetsuit. I was looking at a sleeveless, 3/4 suit, but I still don’t fit on the size chart. Most men’s suits I find are too long. How do I find the right one?
Thanks,
Joy

The best thing to do is go and try them on at a store near you, if possible. That will help get past the sizing chart issue. There are many wetsuit options, including 2 piece suits that will allow us to get a better fit. Give us a call if you have more questions (800.975.2553).

John, That is a great image. We’ll try and get that one at one of the next races. Here is a tip in the meantime. When you are coming out of the water and are about waist deep, you should have the suit unzipped and off to the waist. Let the arms flip inside out. The suit will fill with water and you want that to happen. When you are able to walk on shore step to the side and pull the suit off right there. The legs will have water in them and slide off easier. Also let the legs flip inside out. Carry the suit to transition. If you wait until T1 to remove the suit the water will be gone and the legs will stick to your body. Also, stepping on the suit in the sand is less harmful to the suit than stepping on the suit on asphalt in transition. Hope that helps.
